Summary:

At the end of Attack on Titan, Eren has always intended to be killed by his friends and rid himself of the Titan’s power. It was Mikasa who killed Eren, and Mikasa’s killing of Eren allowed Yamil Fritz to leave the world of the Titans, where he had to create Titans from sand as slaves. It turns out that Emil loved King Fritz because he blindly followed King Fritz’s instructions and created monsters from the sands of the vast world.

Mikasa’s killing of the man she loved allowed Ymir to let go of love, be free, and understand how to escape the cycle of Titanization. It is then implied that Ymir goes to the afterlife.
